New Measures to Fight Illegal Trade in Ancient Art

A new European Convention to criminalize offenses relating to illicit traffic in cultural goods opens to ratification in a few days. It will be interesting to compare the alarmist claims of the archeologists with the number of actual charges they can actually bring. Its my view it will turn out that there is very little actual evidence for the scale of illegal activity that is claimed by those whose aim it is to end private collecting of ancient art. While supporting the fight against culture crime in Europe, let us hope that this new law will not result in additional problems for US collectors and reputable dealers.
